Frequently Asked Questions
Answers for students and families considering lessons. Anything else — just ask.
How do online lessons work?
Lessons are live and online, one-on-one or in a small group. Students work through concepts with Mr. Chen, not through a pre-recorded course alone — questions get answered in the lesson, and homework and mistakes get reviewed together.
What levels do you teach?
Algebra I through AP Calculus BC, plus SAT and ACT math preparation and AMC, BMT, and SMT competition coaching. Course pages, video lessons, and practice are organized by subject on this site.
Is it one-on-one or a small group?
Both are offered. One-on-one lessons follow the student's own pace and weak topics; small groups suit students who like learning alongside peers. Mention your preference in your inquiry.
How do I start?
Start with a free diagnostic test to find your weak topics, then send a Parent Inquiry or Student Inquiry mentioning your current class, your diagnostic results, and your goal.
What happens in a first lesson?
Typically: review of your diagnostic results and recent schoolwork, agreement on goals, and a first lesson on your weakest topic — with practice to do before the next session.
How is progress tracked?
Through diagnostic results, practice and mock exam performance, and feedback in lessons. The site's learning paths also let students tick off steps and see what comes next.
Do you coach math competitions?
Yes — AMC 8, AMC 10, AMC 12, BMT, and SMT. The contest practice section has 58 problems written at real contest difficulty and style, each with a strategy analysis and a worked solution, and the AMC 10 learning path turns them into a training plan.
Do you help with SAT and ACT math?
Yes. The SAT & ACT practice page has 20-question sets plus free SAT and ACT diagnostics.
Can I just use the free materials without lessons?
Yes — the video lessons, practice questions, diagnostics, contest problems, and mock exams on this site are free to use. Lessons add live teaching, personal feedback, and accountability on top of them.
What do I need for an online lesson?
A device with internet, plus pen and paper for working problems. Lessons are online, so students and families from around the world are welcome.
Do you sell practice worksheets?
Yes — printable practice packets are available at the companion store, chenmathtutoring.com, while this site focuses on lessons and free learning materials.
